Photo of the Week: Underwater Aesthetics
Two glass paints made after a visit to the Natural History Museum’s ‘Images of Nature’ gallery, which explores natural history illustration and imaging techniques from explorers’ collections to the present day. Oceanography and underwater aesthetics are relevant to changing knowledges of the coast (e.g. the underwater paintings of Zahr Pritchard, the films of Jean Painlevé, and the X-rays collected by the Smithsonian Institute as Ichthyo: The Architecture of Fish).
Amy Culter read English for her BA and MSt from Wadham College, Oxford (2005-2009), and is currently writing up her PhD in Cultural Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, specialising in the literature and politics of forests and coastlines.
