Oliver Hailes

A lump of concrete lodged
in the groove of my boot,
orphan of some crumbling
bridge or other public
infrastructural feat
now almost already
worthless. A relic of
the body politic

when men made matter for
many. Headstream buried
in overburden then
sea and sky battered by
industry and pregnant
with dread. Let us trace the
state of things in blackened
eyes of smiling offspring.

Oliver Hailes [1] studies international law at the University of Cambridge.
